The work carried out in the town of Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, included the recording of traditional music by the Wolof group and the Mandé group. Multitrack recording workshops were also offered to the participating musicians.
Listen to the sounds of West Africa:
The musician Alassane Camera (AKA GTCalebasse) interprets compositions of his authorship with the Bolon and Calebasse instruments. He recorded all the instruments and voices heard in the compositions. These tracks are the result of multitrack recording workshops held with traditional musicians. Alassane belongs to the Wolof ethnic group but both instruments have been present in West Africa since the Mandé empire.
Falaye Sakho is a "Jeli" (or Griot) from the Mandé ethnic group. He uses his Kora instrument to tell ancestral stories of his people. He also practices improvisation and some of his compositions are improvised stories about current political or social events.
This percussion group performs typical compositions of the Malinké ethnic group. The group was directed by the Senegalese Mamadou Traore, musician and composer.
